Free parental control software can be downloaded from:

Bluecoat's K9 Web Protection If a site is blocked you can:

1) Allow the site for 15 minutes or forever

2) Allow the type of sites (ie.. Social Networking) for 15 minutes or forever

Advantages:

  • Free
  • Any sites not in their database get scanned "on-the-fly" and classified.
  • "Web Use" time restrictions are possible.
  • Reports on what websites have been visited etc.

Disadvantages:

  • Only scans http traffic.. not IM.
  • Software needs installing
  • Not for commercial use

[edit] OpenDNS

One can also block sites using OpenDNS. This tool is free to use.

Advantages:

  • Free
  • Fast service, works well
  • Commercial use allowed
  • No software installation

Disadvantages:

  • Can be easily defeated if one knows how to set up DNS
  • Sites not in their blocklist / not identified are allowed by default.
